NBACL takes a leadership role in the area of social policy, working with government to promote policies and programs that support people with an intellectual disability to live, learn, and work in their communities. We also provide information, resources, and training for families, services providers, and others.

"This weekend was a wonderful experience. It was stimulating, relaxing, hard work. Listening and speaking on so many different stories – I found it moving, funny, and eye-opening. It also raised my anxiety level somewhat as there are so many things that need to be done – new worlds to be created. But I don’t have to do it alone" – parent at an NBACL family retreat.

    Family Voices and Social Policy

NBACL believes strongly in the power and uniqueness of families across New Brunswick. We believe that all people should have the opportunity to lead a meaningful life. Family voices have often been the greatest resource to spark a movement of change that has seen many great successes for individuals with disabilities. Together, we can work to ensure that the community living movement stays strong and continues to shape our communities in becoming more inclusive.

In the Fredericton area – please consider attending our next SUN-FRED meeting. Contact NBACL's Family Support Facilitator Jennifer McCumber for the next date. Not in the Fredericton area? Feel free to attend a Fredericton group meeting, or we can help you start a SUN group in your own community!

    Taking The Journey

Taking the Journey: Information and Advocacy for Families Supporting a Child with a Disability

Raising a Child with a disability often requires greater parental involvement to ensure that your child reaches his or her own potential and gets the things he or she may need. Your role as your child’s advocate may require additional effort, skills, and time.

NBACL has created Taking the Journey, a comprehensive resource for families who require information and strategies to ensure their child has the best opportunity to live a good life. It recognizes that families will be in different situations that will depend in part on the age of their child and on the circumstances or challenges that may be present from time to time. It also allows families to think and plan ahead on a variety of issues that may be on the horizon. The guide also talks about services systems and you role as an advocate for your child within these systems. Service systems can play a big role in all our lives and are often more involved in the lives of people who have a disability. It will be important to know how these systems work and how you can help them be more effective in helping your child have the best chance at success.

Below you will find a list of resources as referenced in various chapters of Taking the Journey:

  • Prudent Payment
  • Autism Resource Centres
  • Early Intervention Agencies
  • Employment Assistance Services (EAS)
  • Provincial Disability Organizations
  • Development of Taking the Journey was made possible thanks to the funding from the Christofor Foundation, the Charles Johnson Charitable Fund, the Grand Falls Association for Community Living, the Regional Development Corporation, and the Government of New Brunswick.

To obtain a preliminary copy of Taking the Journey, please check back often to NBACL’s “Upcoming Events” (link) page for a Taking the Journey workshop near you. Guides will be available in French and English to families across the province when printing is complete.
