Web-based module offers information on inclusive recreation
(Fredericton) The New Brunswick Association for Community Living a non-profit organization which works with and on behalf of children and adults with an intellectual disability officially launched a new web-based module on inclusive recreation today at their provincial office in Fredericton.
The module, called Social Inclusion through Recreation: A Learning Module on Inclusive Recreation is free to recreation services providers such as sports clubs, rec centres, gyms and other operators of community recreation programs and organizations.
“Although we have made great strides to include people with disabilities in our communities, there are still many who experience poor physical and emotional health because they lack opportunities and the support to participate in recreational activities,” says Ken Pike, NBACL director of social policy.
“We notice that people with disabilities who participate in inclusive recreational activities not only enjoy much better health, but better quality of life. Their social networks become stronger and their families also experience less isolation and have a stronger support network.”
While community recreation providers and other organizations are increasingly responding to the goals and needs of people with disabilities, there is still a need to implement and support policies and to share strategies and techniques for including people with disabilities in their programs.
The module offers recreation service providers with information on how to address barriers that prohibit a person with a disability from participating such as cost, transportation, attitudes and how facilities are built. It also addresses how to make simple accommodations to ensure that people with disabilities are included and are able to participate. These accommodations can include connecting a person with a work-out partner, or adapting equipment so that it can be utilized by a broader range of people.
Funding for the module was provided by the New Brunswick Department of Wellness, Culture and Sport.
